Justin Adian b. 1976

Overview

Adian is known for wall-mounted sculptures that comfortably straddle the theoretical divide between painting and three-dimensional form. His core process involves stretching oil, enamel, or spray-painted canvas around foam cushions, often combining multiple organic shapes to form playful composite works. His practice gives depth and color to abstract compositions with a characteristic looseness, wry assertiveness, and unexpected palettes that refuse to settle into flat paintings or freestanding objects.

Adian holds an MFA from Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of Art, and a BFA from the University of North Texas.

He has had solo and selected exhibitions at Skarstedt, London, UK (2014); Luxembourg & Dayan, New York, NY (2014); Blackston, New York, NY (2010, 2012); Martos Gallery, New York, NY (2012); Bryant Park, New York, NY (2010–11); Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, NY (2010); Jack the Pelican Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2009); DepARTment Gallery, Toronto, ON (2009); HBC Gallery, Berlin, DE (2009); North Hall Gallery, New York, NY (2008); and UNT Artspace, Fort Worth, TX (2007).
