Inundada (Een-Un-Tha-Tha)
Means flooded. Here we have a portrait of a jaguar swimming. The jaguar was the most important diety to the ancient Olmecs. The Olmecs were the oldest civilization in Mexico, at their height around 1200 BCE. They revered the jaguar for it’s transitional properties. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar could move between worlds. Acting as a “Nahuatl” (Nah-Wahl), or spirit animal, the jaguar could lead people or deities from the land of the living to the land of the dead.
Here the jaguar is reflected in the water- his double image implies self reflection. The jaguar cannot see himself without the water, he cannot imagine how he is perceived by others.
