Lena Henke’s Bei Klaus und Annette (at Klaus and Annette’s) is part of a group of new ceramics. Each is squeezed, twisted, or torqued, vacillating between tree branch and horse hoof. Produced while meditating on her childhood, Henke’s handmade sculptures bear deep emotions and associations, relating to her adolescence growing up on a horse farm in a rural environment, surrounded by the Teutoburg forest in Germany. Henke’s title quotes a notation from her baby book, which her parents designed for her first year of life, in which each photograph was accompanied by a description—in this case, a visit to a family friend’s home.
