Alloy investigates the potential of mixture—industrial and elastic, rigid and malleable, found and fabricated. These works act as alloys of the urban landscape, forging new structures from the collision of texture, function, and meaning. Branden situates these hybrid forms as both material experiments and metaphors for the layered conditions of contemporary life. His signature use of hand-sewn textiles and stretched spandex creates a dynamic sense of tension: fabrics strain against frames, spill beyond borders, and crawl across walls—suggesting both containment and escape. In this state of expansion, the surfaces remain taut yet unstable, as if always on the verge of rupture. Through this physical intensity, Branden reveals the precarious balance between rigidity and flexibility, utility and excess, order and entropy.
Color plays a vital role in Alloy, where vibrant clashes and abrupt transitions generate a visual symphony that echoes the layered chaos of the urban environment. Mesh overlays, stitched seams, and improvised assemblages introduce rhythm and interruption, evoking the raw energy of city life—its density, its dissonance, and its constant flux.

SAM BRANDEN: DOGBANE
25 Oct - 20 Dec 2024Urban life, specifically navigating and surviving the boroughs of New York City, has long fascinated Branden, who has roots in street fashion and graffiti culture. Simultaneously, the artist originally hails from the Midwest, with his formative years spent immersed in the splendor of the natural world. This dichotomy of influence is central to the metaphorical underpinnings of DOGBANE, which takes its title from the fibrous flowering shrub whose stems can be used to make rope and thread but is also notorious for poisoning surrounding wildlife.Read more -
